I DON'T KNOW WHO DID THIS PODCAST OF THESE PROLIFIC BLACK KARATEKA OF THE 70S BECAUSE I COME FROM THAT ERA. AND COMPETED IN THAT ERA. AND NO MOST OF THESE BROTHERS MANY WHO HAVE ALREADY MADE THEIR TRANSITION. SO LET ME SAY THIS AS IN 7 DECADES ELDER WHO'S STILL TRAINS AND TEACHES and conducts RESEARCH IN THE OAKLAND AREA. ALBEIT I WAS BORN AND RAISED IN NEW YORK CITY METROPOLITAN AREA. GRADUATED FROM COLLEGE THERE AND MOVE TO THE WEST COAST IN THE LATE SEVENTIES. BUT I AM GLAD TO SEE SOMEBODY WHOEVER THIS BROTHER IS OR SISTER PAYING HOMAGE TO THESE GREAT BROTHERS IN THE ARTS FROM BACK IN THE DAY. LET ME TELL YOU THIS, THE BROTHERS AND SISTERS COMPETING back then WERE VERY VERY GOOD!!!! THESE GUYS WERE PROLIFIC!!! I KNOW I WAS THERE I KNEW MOST OF THEM AND COMPETED AGAINST SOME OF THEM. WE THE BLACK MAN DOMINATED MARTIAL ARTS BACK IN THE 60S AND 70S. I GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL IN 72. THE TONG DOJO LOCATED ON FULTON STREET IN BROOKLYN I USE TO GO DOWN THERE ALL THE TIME AND SPAR AND WE USED TO GO AT IT!!! FULL CONTACT BARE-KNUCKLE NO HEADGEAR NO MOUTHPIECE NO CUP NO ARM PADS NO KNEE PADS NO SHIN PADS WE WENT AT IT YA HEAR ME!! IN TRADITIONAL KARATE!! DON'T LET NONE OF THESE CLOWNS OUT HERE ON RUclips SOCIAL MEDIA AND THESE MMA GUYS TELL YOU THAT TRADITIONAL KARATE DOES NOT WORK. THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT! YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE AN MMA FIGHTER TO BE CONSIDERED A GOOD FIGHTER. AND MMA DOES NOT CANCEL OUT ALL THE OTHER TRADITIONAL ART FORMS THAT ARE JUST AS EFFECTIVE IN THE STREET AS MMA IS, TAKE IT FROM ME! I'VE HAD MANY FIGHTS IN THE STREET AND I'M A 5TH DEGREE BLACK BELT IN TAEKWONDO THE OLD HARD STYLE CHIDOKWAN! IT'S A MILITARY STYLE OF TAEKWONDO STILL PRACTICE TODAY BY THE NORTH KOREAN ARMY KNOWN AS THE ROK ARMY. ROK STANDS FOR REPUBLIC OF KOREA. BUT SENSEI THOMAS LA PUPPET AND Sensei GEORGE COFIELD, THE WILDER TWINS, AND BROTHERS SIFU WILLIAM OLIVER THE LATE GREAT WILLIAM OLIVER. WE HAD SENSEI MOISES POWELL UP ON 125TH AND SENSEI FRED HAMILTON UP IN HARLEM AS WELL. THESE ARE THE MAIN PROGENITORS OF THE BLACK KARATE FEDERATION EAST COAST ALONG WITH THE LATE GREAT BROTHER JIM KELLY AND BROTHER STEVE SANDERS SENSEI STEVE SANDERS, NOW STEVEN MUHAMMAD LEADS THE FOI, WERE ALL GREAT MEN!! BUT IF YOU LOOK AT TODAY IN THESE TIMES DUE TO THIS BS CULTURAL APPROPRIATION CRAP THAT HAS BEEN STARTED BY OTHER ETHNIC MINORITY IMMIGRANTS THAT HAVE COME TO THIS COUNTRY NOW LOOK AT THE BLACK MARTIAL ARTIST AS IF TO SAY WHY ARE YOU DRESSED IN A HAKAMA, A GI. THE IMPLICATION IS THAT MARTIAL ARTS IS AN ASIAN THING. NOT KNOWING THAT MARTIAL ARTS IN AMERICA WAS DOMINATED ADD POPULARIZED PROLIFICALLY BY BLACK MARTIAL ARTIST. IN FACT BRUCE LEE OWES HIS SUCCESS INITIALLY IN TERMS OF THE POPULARIZATION OF HIS FILMS DUE TO A PRIMARILY BLACK AUDIENCE FACT!! BRUCE LEE WAS A REMARKABLE HUMAN BEING A STELLAR MARTIAL ARTIST. WHO HAD A LOT OF RESPECT FOR THE BLACK MARTIAL ARTIST BACK IN THE DAY. IN FACT HIS VERY VERY FIRST STUDENT WAS A BROTHER FROM OAKLAND. I HAVE A COPY OF THE BOOK THAT THAT BROTHER MADE WHEN HE WAS TRAINING WITH BRUCE LEE I HAVE A COPY OF THAT BOOK! HIS FIRST STUDENT WAS AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN WHEN THE CHINATOWN KUNG FU ASSOCIATION BACK THEN TOLD BRUCE YOU ARE FORBIDDEN FOR TEACHING ANYBODY OUTSIDE THE RACE THAT IS TRUE. BRUCE DID IT ANYWAY. HOWEVER THERE WERE MANY MANY ASIANS AND LATINO HISPANICS BACK IN THE DAY WE ALL TRAINED TOGETHER WE DIDN'T HAVE THIS RACE BEEFS WE DIDN'T HAVE THIS SHIT TODAY. DIVISIONS LIKE YOU HAVE TODAY. AND EVEN BLACK FOLK HAVE FALLEN PREY TO IT. ALL THE SOCIAL MEDIA CRAP. EVEN THE WHITE GUYS THE PROLIFIC WHITE MARTIAL ARTIST OF THE 60S AND 70S LIKE CHUCK NORRIS, JOE LEWIS, JOE CURLEY, SKIPPER MULLINS, OH AND I CAN'T FORGET THE GREAT BILL SUPERFOOT WALLACE. WE WERE A BROTHERHOOD!! MARTIAL ARTS BACK THEN WAS NOT ABOUT MONEY IT WAS NOT ABOUT COMMERCIALIZATION OR PROFITEERING LIKE IT IS TODAY. IT WAS ABOUT BUILDING BETTER HUMAN BEINGS. SO WHOEVER TOOK THE TIME TO PUT THIS TOGETHER TO PAY HOMAGE TO THESE MARTIAL ARTS PIONEERS, YOU TO BE SALUTED AND APPLAUDED.👏🏿👏🏿 AND THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS.

Nisei Goju gave me the foundation to train the arts correctly. I’ve traveled and train under great Goju Sensei, including training under Toguchi Sensei and Matayoshi Sensei. Finally I found my final Sensei…Kow Loon Ong Sensei.

What people seem to forget, & before people start jumping up & down & shouting “Racist” this is not what is meant by this, these are just facts. When it came to Kung Fu movies, White people were actually the last people to them with some exceptions. It was Blacks & Latinos who embraced them first, just like Bboying, it was a Black & Latino culture & then White people came in & it went global.

NO demonstration of "breaking" from the false creators, NO descriptions of the "breaking" moves they supposedly did, NO witnesses. It's a falsehood that's been told for decades.

It also needs to be mentioned that there were several pioneers of full contact Bare Knuckle Karate on the east coast and some of those names were Fred Miller, Shihan Errol Bennett, Young Jerry Steward, Happy Robot Crump, Earl Thompson, Mylo Thompson. These fighters fought not only in point events, but bare knuckle (to the face and body). Ok let me jump in since I just happened to come to this channel by happenstance. As a Muslim who takes my practice very seriously, I say in all humbleness that a few people have been left out who were some of the biggest hitters on the east coast and represented the east coast whenever the west visited. The Late Fred Miller and my personal mentor who I just spoke to yesterday, Shihan Errol Bennett (The Bronx Express). The reason they are overlooked is because they were not loud with it. I've heard some positive and negative comments/opinions about those NY Dojos back in the day. Principally because of their "estrangement" (racially motivated I assume) from their mother schools in Japan and elsewhere. Legend has it that they trained some of the most brutal and skilled fighters seen in those days, and had very strict regimes.

I remember seeing Kevin Thompson‘s name come up in a variety of Karate magazines back in the day, especially official Karate, which I read to see the stats on the various tournaments around the country. I noticed that not only did his name come up in KUMITE but also in weapons and KATA! For a while, he seemed like an urban legend he even had a superhero name,“ LITTLE. KA” I had the pleasure of meeting him when I competed as a purple belt in a tournament my sensei SAMMCGEE took our school too. I remember I hit this guy with a” MUAYTHAI” style round kick to the body that literally had his body doubled over on my leg like a laundry bag. The referee called point and gave him time to recover once he did. I hit him with a hook kick to the head, but seeing that he was so hurt I threw the kick over his head, but the refs gave me points for it. After the match, Kevin Thompson himself who unknown to me with either watching or was one of the referees personally came up to me and congratulated me on my technique. By that time, I knew exactly who he was. I was so proud that he came up to personally encourage me because I was a nobody and he made me feel like a somebody. He’s greatly missed.

I love it when he says back then Karate tournaments didn’t mean anything to me because he was defeating guys out in the streets so basically he KNEW that his martial arts techniques WORKED in real time. He didn’t need karate trophies to validate his fighting ability. And I think at the same thing with Bruce Lee who was street fighting in Hong Kong in challenge matches, and on the rooftops who is so gifted that he made a renowned master of kung fu want to train him privately and break the rules of training someone who wasn’t a full blooded Chinese. I’m bringing this up because of the noise regarding the Chuck Norris‘s and Joe Lewis‘s who love to say that Bruce never fought therefore his claim to being a master is invalid. That’s totally ridiculous like the master here he didn’t feel the NEED to prove himself as being good to people who are doing nothing more than playing” Karate tag”
